Crispus Attucks High School was targeted with closure in 1981 because of a rapid declining enrollment. The school escaped closure but was converted to a junior high school in 1986. Also occurring in 1986, was the positioning of the Crispus Attucks facility in the National Register of Historic Places. The school suffered another educational change in 1993 when it was changed to a middle school. The Crispus Attucks facility changed in 2006 back to a high school. The Indianapolis Public School System named it “The Medical Magnet at Crispus Attucks”.
This proclamation changed the school from a junior high school to a medical preparatory, grades 6-12 high school. The change was due to the school’s close proximity to the campus of the Indiana University School of Medicine and several associated hospitals. The first class to go through the medical magnet program graduated in the spring of 2013.
